Builders Supply of Petersburg SBMA Dealer of the Year!

Builders Supply of Petersburg, Petersburg, Virginia received SBMA’s Dealer of the Year award at our 2008 Building Products Buying Show, February 6, at Show Place in High Point, North Carolina. SBMA members receive nominations for the award based on community involvement, involvement in industry related activities, contribution to SBMA and/or NLBMDA and overall business success and accomplishments.

Builders Supply started in 1903.  In 1948 Lewis Walker bought it.  John Van Landingham started to work there in 1949, son Jim has been there for 33  years. In 1980 the employees signed an agreement to purchase the company from Walker.  Thirteen later it was theirs.  In 2002 they became a full ESOP company.  Today they have  50 employees in their two locations, 222 N. Market Streetand the Truss plant at 2122 East Whitehall Road.  It hasn’t all been smooth sailing, in 1980 the company had a flood, in 1993 a tornado and in the fall of 2002 a fire in the warehouse, but like the energizer bunny, they just keep going and going.

Past SBMA Chairman, Jim Van Landingham said of his tenure as chair that he wouldn’t trade anything for his year as chair.  He got to meet a lot of people and it gave him a reason to walk in a door.  He’d say, “Hey, we’re active and if  you’re not, come on!”  Jim visited all dealers in Virginia during his year as chairman.  He felt it was his obligation as chair to be visible, to be visible for SBMA.  And that he was. Van Landingham is still visible at SBMA events and in his community.  He is currently working on a 5 million dollar fund raising event for Richmond Bland College, a Junior College in affiliation with William and Mary.  The campaign will raise money for student housing.  He is also Vice President of the Board for Southside Virginia Emergency Crew. But it is not all about Jim, he says.  It is the entire group. The employees are very involved in United Way, having deductions from their payroll for the organization.  They are all very active with that group and others. Dad, John Van Landingham said,  “It is always a nice surprise when someone says something nice about you. It is a nice surprise to be chosen (as SBMA Dealer of the Year).  We are a small business that has been in operation over 100 years and hopefully going another 100 years.” They like to be active in the community. In summation John said, “ they are flattered and happy to be looked upon in a good light by our peers in the Southern Building Material Association.”

What does membership in SBMA mean to Jim Van Landingham?  It’s a big deal.  It’s about relationships and expanding relationships. It about being able to sit down at a table and discuss common issues with non-competing people. It has been great to get to know people in other states.  SBMA is a great resource for educational material.

When asked what his first impression was when it was announced that Builders Supply of Petersburg was the Dealer of the Year he said first he thought “No way!”  Said he was standing next to Patricia Jones and said “No Way!”  Jim said he didn’t know how it happened.  He prides himself on being in the know on things.  So although his first reaction was , “No Way!” his second impression was “You got me!” Yes,  Jim we do have you and boy are we happy we do.

Thank you for all you do for SBMA.  Congratulations to everyone at Builders Supply of Petersburg and the Petersburg community for having such a great company and great people in their midst!

Cox Industries began as Cox Wood Preserving in 1954 producing quality Wolmanized® pressure-treated lumber for outdoor use. W. B. Cox, Sr., and his brother E. J. Cox founded the company in Orangeburg, South Carolina, on one acre of land and with three employees. Cox joined SBMA in 1961. Today, Cox Industries subsidiaries include 10 locations participating in the production of a variety of quality pressure-treated wood products. Combined, these facilities cover over 350 acres and employ more than 400 people in five states.

Cox Industries is now in its sixth decade and still family operated. Cox continues to provide durable outdoor wood products for residential, commercial industrial, and utility applications.

Ken Panitt Marketing Manager has been with Cox for 8 years.  When asked what he thought on finding out they were Supplier of the Year “I thought it was great!” Ken said he looked on SBMA as family. He  said how they enjoy SBMA’s summer conference making it an annual adventure now. They look forward to seeing everybody and what a comfortable environment it is. There is never an SBMA function that a member from Cox isn’t there.

Cox helped raise over $30,000 in donations and contributed building materials toward construction of the Habitat House for the Lewis family. In addition, Cox employees, board members and family personally donated furniture, linens, dishes and a Christmas tree to further outfit the new home. The Cox family volunteered nearly 600 man-hours toward the construction of the house, contributing to everything from the wall-raising to vinyl siding installation, painting, cleaning and landscaping.

"We at Cox Industries are extremely proud of Lashonda and the way she has risen above her difficult circumstances," said Cox President Mike Johnson. "Lashonda has managed to balance work, school and six children and still volunteer with Habitat. Cox is honored to help provide this opportunity to the Lewis family." Other community involvements include Carpenters for Christ, United Way, Katrina victims, sponsoring ball teams for employees children, etc. , Katrina victims, sponsoring ball teams for employees children, etc.

Haley Kizer said the fact that the award was in memory of Paul made all the difference in the world.  I’ve never been so honored to receive anything in all my life.” Haley said she has the posters in her office as well as in her home.  “I personally took it as an award for Paul.”  In an article she wrote for Cox’s newsletter she stated “This award was presented to me by Larry Adams who did not have a dry eye. Paul was loved by the SBMA members and had been associated with them for 30 years, they were family to him.  You could tell that he will sorely be missed. Cox should be proud to have had such a well respected employee as Paul Turner.”  Haley said of the award “That was awesome!”  Thanks Haley, so are you, so was Paul and so is Cox.

Cox company motto, is “If you need it, just ask Cox,”  So true.

Paul Turner was loved by all and he will be sorely missed, but we at SBMA are positive he is smiling down on all of us and has a story for us when we get there.  God bless.

Consultation With OSHA
As most of you know, in addition to the enforcement division of OSHA, there is what has been called in the past the "voluntary compiance". Voluntary (now called a Consultation) is when you call OSHA to come in and inspect you company and tell you what you need to do to put your business in order.
The Consultation division does not talk to the enforcement division and, in fact, if you have an appointment with (or are in the midst of) a consultation and the enforcement division comes to you site, you simply need to inform them of this and they will, after checking on the information, leave without doing an inspection.  After a phone call from you, a time and date will be set up for a consultatnt to come for a visit.  (This is all at no charge of course.)  The consultation division will review your location and make recommendations for changes.  These changes must be made but, as we understand it, they are willing to work with you on a time schedule.  They realize that sometimes the changes require capital that may not be readily available.  As long as you have a plan and are moving toward correcting any problems you are considered to be still under the consultation umbrella.
Several dealers in NC, SC, TN and VA have gone through this process and agree that it is very beneficial.  If you are interested in pursuing this avenue you only need to call the number listed below for your state.  If you would like more information on this process, you may also go to OSHA.gov and review the information on the consultations.  Also, don't hesitate to give me a call with questions and I'll be happy to secure the answers for you.
