ECMD SBMA 2010 Supplier of the
Year

“ECMD

Larry Adams, SBMA President, presents Buford
Arning with SBMA’s Supplier of the Year Award)
SBMA presented ECMD with the
Supplier of the Year award at the annual
Building Products Buying Show February 3, at
ShowPlace in High Point, North Carolina.
Nominations are sent to dealer members in the
association and are based on community
involvement, involvement in industry related
activities, contribution to SBMA and/or NLBMDA
and overall business success and
accomplishments.
ECMD was started in 1982 as a
distributor of wood mouldings by three
entrepreneurs. The original company name was
East Coast Millwork Distributors. Allen Dyer is
the only remaining founder still active at ECMD.
Buford Arning has been with ECMD for 20 years,
but worked with them as a consultant for three
years prior to that. As president of Arndt &
Herman Building Products, his primary
responsibility is continually ensuring they meet
their customer commitments.
Company wide, ECMD has about 550
employees with multiple locations. They have
distribution centers in Elkin, NC, Sparta, TN,
Summerville, SC, Houston, TX and Marysville, CA.
Manufacturing plants are in Lenoir and
Wilkesboro, NC. The corporate offices are in N.
Wilkesboro, NC.
According to their website,
“ECMD’s unique company structure allows our
business partners to have flexible supply
solutions across a wide range of products, from
mouldings, windows and stair systems to doors,
columns, outdoor railing systems and much more.
With so many product offerings and a
specialized, efficient ordering and distribution
system, our partners are able to get exactly
what they need when they need it.”
ECMD works of the philosophy of
doing the best they possibly can. That ranks at
the top of the list whether they are talking
about industry-leading breadth of product
selection, reliable and predictable delivery
services, genuine customer service and seasoned
field representation. Their focus has always
been oriented to engineering the most efficient
supply chain. They continually look for ways to
improve their systems and processes in support
of the normal business activities.
Besides servicing their
customers, ECMD serves the community. They
donated land behind their facility to the city.
It is now the nicest sports field complex in the
area. They have also been a great service to
many dealers by helping with Habitat homes. When
asked what he thought on winning the Supplier of
the Year award Arning replied they were “caught
totally off guard. The past year has been a
tough one due to the housing depression but we
seem to work harder and longer than we ever have
making sure we are in position to take full
advantage when the business rebounds.”
We thank everyone at ECMD for all
you do for SBMA, our members, our communities.
You are all great. Congratulations on an honor
well deserved.
